Days 51 & 52!

Day 51 - Friday 20/1/12


Amelia had a HUGE day today, we tried suck feeds. First I tried breastfeeding, but she didn't show much interest. she got really sleepy really fast. I think she thought it was just nice having cuddles with me. Because as soon as I put a bottle in her mouth she sucked HALF the feed! She was upped to 45ml from 40ml! So she's on full feeds now for her weight and corrected age.

Amelia's weight today is 2250grams, so the same as yesterday. And little miss is STILL on CPAP pressure of 5 and coping well, only having small destats when she has a feed and digesting a feed, but manages to resolve really fast. She is cycling still on 6 hours on CPAP and 3 hours on PBF. Her levels on PBF are coming down, she needed a lot more oxygen a few days ago compared to today. C'mon baby girl, you can do it!

We are also in the line for moving to SCN 2! Its been a long stay in NICU/ SCN 3 which is the highest care nursery. So Amelia's cot is all packed up and she is ready to go as soon as another baby is born and needs her spot.

Day 52 - Saturday 21/1/12


Daniel and I visited today and I had another try at breastfeeding, but she didn't want a bar of it today. She still managed to suck half of her 45ml feed again, which Daddy fed to her. FIRST bottle feed and he done AMAZINGLY too! She likes to be cuddled while being burped, so the whole sit up is out. We move her onto our tummy and pat her back and usually (like today) she lets out a HUGE burp, which the whole nursery can hear. Haha :)  

So... Miss Amelia is up 10grams. So she now weighs 2260grams. She is still on Level 1 calories (most, if not all babies are on calories in the NICU)

The doctor (her consultant from Birth) came around and told us how well she was doing. Our main aim now is to get her feeding and breathing on her own. This means she has to have either breast or bottle feeds all day, because when she is home, she WONT have the tube. So we have to make sure she has enough strength in her to handle and digest a feed WITHOUT destats or bradys or anything like that.

She is currently sitting in around 23-25 percent oxygen on CPAP and when she is off CPAP and on PBF she sits from anywhere around 60ml/min to 145ml/min. (Which Ive been told is still a lot.) But a lot better than a few days ago, which she was sitting around 225ml/min... and still destating!
